As a kid, I had medium and large size hermit crabs that pinched the everliving sh*t out of me so I can't even fathom the pain one of these big sonsabitches could inflict. I read once that coconut crabs can literally clamp down, completely slice through, and detach a person's limbs -- and I don't doubt that for a second.

we have coconut crabs where I’m from in Solomon Islands. It’s likely she was already dead when they consumed her. They’re pretty skittish creatures and would probably run away if she was alive and kicking. There’s no real need to be afraid of them. They’re really easy to catch and delicious to eat. just keep your fingers away from there claws as they can probably lop your wrist off.

Coconut crabs are great pranksters, too. In Helmet for My Pillow, a Marine tells a story of one night in Guadalcanal in WWII. Another Marine had set up a hammock despite knowing that if the Japanese attacked, he would be fully exposed. He didn't care, he wanted a comfortable place to sleep, not a hole in the ground. He bragged about his hammock all day.
Shortly after dark, all the Marines heard a scuttling sound come from a nearby creek toward the Marines' position. A moment later, there was the sound of a rope breaking, followed by a thump and a lot of cursing from the Marine with the hammock. The scuttling sound faded back toward the creek as everyone laughed. The Marine picked himself up from where the hammock had dumped him, tied the severed rope of his hammock back up, and laid back down.
An hour or so later, there came the scuttling, the snapping, the thump, the cursing, the scuttling, and the laughing again. The Marine tied his hammock back up. An hour or so later, it happened again. And again. And again, all night long, to the delight of all of the non-hammock-owning Marines.
