Also, I used to work for DSS in Australia. In the early 90s they introduced call centres - and took staff away from the Regional Offices 'cos they reckoned that the call centres would save us work.
The hold times when calling the call centres were well in excess of 2 hours.
So people gave up and came into the office. so, they took staff away but actually increased our workload. Some high-level public servant in Canberra probably got a promotion for that debacle

The longest I was on hold was for 40+ minutes. It wasn't because of the time that it was "long" but after about 15-20 minutes, the music cut out completely. Just dead silence. I panicked, thinking it dropped byt nope, they just didn't want to pay for me to listen to elevator music. I was on hold for relief funds after a flood, so I had to wait but the silence was so anxiety inducing. Normally when I'm on hold, I just do other things while I wait but this time I was constantly checking the phone.
