Note: The last image isn’t of Sarah Rector but of her mother, Rose, sitting inside Sarah’s mansion.

Sarah Rector received her land allotment under the Treaty of 1866, as both of her parents were grandchildren of Creek Indians born before the American Civil War.

She lived on the land with her family, and soon after, oil was discovered on her property, earning her about $300 per day (roughly $10,100 today). There were, of course, several attempts to steal her land and fortune, all of which Rector resisted.

She went on to attend Tuskegee University and eventually settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where she lived comfortably with her husband, Kenneth Campbell, a local businessman.

Her mansion still stands in Kansas City, although she had to sell it during the Great Depression after losing most of her wealth. However, she managed to remain solvent and live comfortably for the rest of her life.

She passed away in 1967 at the age of 65.
