In terms of the harsh laws that banned criticizing the king, it is important to note that Rama IX almost never applied them in any way towards protestors and pardoned those who rarely did get arrested by those laws. He was loved for that reason, sadly his son and new king doesnt share the same view and does harshly push down against criticism through the laws.

Was usually the richest monarch in the world in his last decade. He lived with his mother in Switzerland through the Second World War. Mom mostly stayed in Switzerland after he became king; her English handwriting is immaculate.

Fun fact: Queen Elizabeth IIā€™s reign was 88 days longer than King Bhumibolā€™s, but neither of them came close to King Louis XIV of France, who was on the throne for over 72 years (He was only 4 when he became King).

When I visited Thailand I was told that about the King's "great powers" such as a time when the country was on the verge of civil war as civilian and military leaders kept battling for control. The King called both leaders to his office and made them sit on the floor while he lectured them about morality on live TV, followed by both leaders making a public apology together ending the sturggle.

The reason heā€™s so beloved is because he could have used his power to persecute and punish people, but he didnā€™t. So it seems from the outside like he didnā€™t do enough, but from from the Thai perspective they know that he chose to use his authority sparingly so that in the rare times when he did use it, it was a really big deal. For example, with the laws banning criticism of the king, anytime somebody actually got arrested for those laws he would forgive & pardon them instead of punishing them. There was also the time that he prevented a Civil War by compelling the leaders of each side to come to his office and he literally lectured them both on live TV and force them to come to a truce. He had to stay neutral most of the time, if he didnā€™t want to end up like his father, so whenever he wasnā€™t neutral and actually made a statement it was a huge deal. Him being nerdy and boring just added to his charm.

The Thai monarchy is the worst example of a representive monarchy. Instead of giving it's nation stability aka. the biggest reason why most monarchical countries don't get rid off their monarchy, their monarchy was just disinterested on the entire coup d'etat stuff that plagued their country.

Thailand has a pretty vibrant protest movement that definitely includes criticism of the royal family and the lese majeste laws, especially among younger Thai people.

One of the largest Thai Buddhist temples outside of Thailand is named after him and is located in his birth state of Massachusetts. I remember going there while it was being constructed and visiting the Thai monks in their residence next door. They were very amiable people and it was incredibly interesting to listen to them. I went back again and visited the fully constructed temple. I don't know if it is the absolute biggest temple outside of Thailand, but it is certainly huge.

Rama IX remains one of Thailands most popular king which is unfortunately not shared by his successor, Rama X.

My father was interned in Switzerland together with him when he was a teenager. They became friends and exchanged jazz records.

Fun fact, one of his daughters family lived in my neighborhood in a suburb of San Diego, California, and two of her children attended my public high school. His grandson, named Bhumi after the king, had autism and tragically died in the 2004 tsunami.

A clear sign of the influence and popularity he had was that near every coup in modern Thai history began (and often ended) with an affirmation of their loyalty to the monarch.

A Philadelphia restaurant published an ad showing Bhumibol's picture, but with a Mohawk haircut photoshopped onto it! They got tons of hate mail written in substandard English...

From what I can tell, he was at least a better king than his successor.

The king was still an amazing man. Been to Thailand 9 times in my life and im amazed by how genuinely people respect him. And there's good reason too. Despite being a ceremonial monarch, he was personally involved in the nation's development.

A good story is how he once used the swimming pools of his Palace to test cheaper breeds of fish from Japan to make sure the people could get enough food during Thailand's poorer days. He also is credited for making cloud seeding mainstream and for opening the world's first fully educational TV stations so that the poor could still learn without having to pay for tutors. Amazing man, but sadly his son the current king is his polar opposite.

I've spent some time in Thailand, specifically in the Northern parts, and a lot of Thai people there absolutely adored Rama IX because of his immense efforts to eradicate opium and reliance on opium farming from the area. It took him 20 years to do it but he relatively successfully locked Thailand out of the golden triangle of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos, while also cresting a fund to guarantee farmers a liveable income as long as they don't farm poppies for opium

As a foreigner living in Thailand I learned so much about this amazing genius of a king, he was really a special human being in every way. And Iā€™m not even a monarchist. Respect to this king. šŸ™
