Ballonfiësta Barneveld had its first edition in 1982 with just a few balloons commemorating 500 years after Jan van Schaffelaar jumped of the tower to 'save his men'. The intention was not to have Jan van Schaffelaar fall from the tower again but to have him go up in the air with a hot air balloon. Barnevelder Ben Bläss together with hot air balloon pilot Hans Zoet were first to organize this event from the Koewei behind the Schaffelaar Castle in Barneveld in The Netherlands. After that it became a regularly event on the calendar in July or August. The last couple of years it has been mainly in August.
