He’s the BEST drummer ever! There may be faster drummers. Drummers that use a lot of drum sets at one time.
And that’s all well & fine, but none can compare to his originality, or his innovative vibe. He is THE coolest drummer of all time!

Gene was terrific. His Tom Tom play was innovative . Now I see where Ginger Baker was influenced. Baker too was influeneced by Africian Drum playing and it was evident in his Drumming with Synchopation and lots of Tom Tom playing.

Even later drummers such as Milford Graves said Genes’ importance was incalculable. And older people who say him play say it was fabulous.

Chick Webb, Art Blakey , sing, sing sing is Louie Prima's song for Bing Crosby.. so its Sing Bing Sing, Gene , no doubt was a major innovator in the New Drumset Paradigm, but I do believe he would be the first one to give that Title to Chick or Baby Dodds , which he does in several of his interview.s. and in the infamous Battle of the Bands with Chicks band vs Goodman 1938 at the Savoy. well Krupa just had to bow to Chick..and thats how that happened..
I had met Gene and of course many of the other legends who knew my UNcle Ed SHaughnessy.. and it was a time when Jazz was not as popular .. in the late 60's early 70's..but that day with Gene and BUddy was memorable to me and I carry that beat they played on the table in every note that I play.. I was living in Harlem at the time.. MY dad was a NYPD blue in Harlem..GEne visited our youth group for PBA...he was a kind soul.
