I always thought the bids should be written down without knowing the other bids, then all revealed at the same time before the price is revealed. As is, the last bidder has a huge advantage.

It's legit strat since its the last bidder. Same with the $1 bid. Family Guy did a cutaway bit on this as well.

I always loved the contestants who, after someone bids maybe $500, they'd panic and bid $499. Usually that didn't work out.

I always thought that was a scumbag's way of bidding. I always felt bad for the genuine bidder who made a smart, valid bid and then would get knocked out by a scumbag.

It's dirty but completely legal.

I would never want to bet first. Huge disadvantage.

The title asked how we feel about this tactic.
Some of you simply stated it's been done forever and isn't new, which is obvious, given that the clip is probably at least 40 years old.
How I feel? It is a dirty, scumbag move, but as it's allowed by their own rules, how I feel doesn't matter. It is a legitimate way to play the game, and objectively the smartest tactic.

I wonder what that ring would cost today?

What year was it because Bob Barker still had the dark hair?

Why are people saying that this is a dirty tactic!? You can't say it's within the rules, but then say it's dirty! They didn't go to the show to get a supply of Hamburger Helper for being a contestant that didn't appear on stage!
If I as a contestant bid 650, I wouldn't expect them to bid 700 to spare my feelings because that ring could be 675 or something!

It's always been like that. Ppl bid $1 above someone.

Well...I pretty much have nothing to say about it. This has been going on forever. The point is being as close as you can to the actual price of the product without going over and she was.

Well she was off by 50% of the price.

Who bid a doller?

That $1 overbid is a crap way of doing things. They should have blind bidding and then simultaneous reveal of all bids.
