As a fencer I can tell u it’s safe, you wear helmets and a lot of protection. It still can hurt but u won’t get any injuries maybe just some bruises

fencing swords have a tip on the end rather than a point, when the top of the tip connects to the bottom it completes a circuit and an electrical board shows a point has been scored

Fencing swords aren't sharp, and their ends have little buttons on them. Also, while fencing, you wear a helmet with mask. Apart from that though, head hits are legal in sabre and epee but not foil.

I think competing fencers wear helmets but also I think the sword being super bendy helps a lot with not getting stabbed too
