The first use of gold objects is closely related to the first use of copper objects, Implying that gold was a by-product of the early copper production already from the 5th millennium BC.

At the start, gold was used for small objects, like beads, rings, bracelets or covering for other items and clothing decorations.

Gold accessories like appliques, bracelets, rings and dress pins are notable artefacts of the early Urnfield culture in Europe, mostly found as grave goods, but also as stray finds and parts of larger hoards and deposits.

Wide variety of items was discovered, some more common in different parts of Europe than others. Vessels were located in the north, garment decorations in the eastern and northern alps, hats in present-day Germany and France.

The gold jewelry is most often associated with costumes of notable women and were usually paired with bronze adornments, like pins and diadems.

Gold objects also often depicted movement of the sun and the passage of days. Such ornaments reflected peoples’ interest in the passage of time and seasons and movement of astral bodies. Besides such patterns appearing on different adornments and artifacts, one of the most famous objects of this kind is the Trundholm sun chariot (Solvognen) from Denmark.
