Graffiti vandal arrested for defacing Spanish artist’s mural in Bangkok

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has vowed tough action after vandals defaced a newly unveiled mural by Spanish artist Carolina Adan Caro on Charoen Krung 30.

The incident sparked outrage, with Governor Chadchart stating, “The wrongdoing of a few people has destroyed the good intentions behind this work.”

The mural, part of the “Krung Thep Creative Streets” project, was created in collaboration with the French Embassy, several European embassies, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

The project invited 15 international artists to paint murals on 15 walls, linking 3–4 creative districts across the city.

Carolina’s piece took 7–10 days to complete and was officially launched just a week before the vandalism.

In the early hours of September 27, three individuals on motorcycles spray-painted over the artwork in just 17 minutes. CCTV footage captured the act, and police have already apprehended one suspect, who confessed.

Adis Ngamjitsuksri, a senior advisor to the governor, confirmed that the case is being treated as criminal damage to property, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of 60,000 baht, or both. Authorities stressed that this was far more serious than ordinary graffiti, as it destroyed valuable cultural property.
