As a chicagan I wonder if this applies to us, we have to east side, that's the lake. And in the suburbs land closer to the city, especially on the train lines, is very valuable

In Tokyo it was also down to the geology. West side had strong rock, east was muddy swamp by the Sumida river. West side did better in earthquakes. The old name for the east side is Shitamachi, meaning "under town" or downtown.
