You might have heard of the silk road, the famous network of overland trade routes that connected China to Europe, but very few know about the first silk road. For centuries before the overland route came to prominence, the preferred method for connecting east and west was by sea. In antiquity, making the overland route from Roman territory to China was near impossible because of the multiple empires and and lawless wilderness that lay between. For example, in the Hellenistic period, one could not travel the entirety of the old Persian "royal road" because portions of it were controlled by different hostile powers all vying for control over the whole route. For those reasons, if one wanted to find silk and spices to trade, the safest option was to travel from Roman ports on the Red Sea and cross the Indian Ocean during monsoon season, no easy feat. But the lure of immense profits drove ancient traders to take the risk, resulting in extensive hoards of Roman gold coins discovered as far afield as Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu in the south of India.
