I believe we should seek to verify what the leaders of the church say using the scriptures rather than past or present church leaders. Lehi was commanded to get the brass plates for this very reason.

...yes... but, aren't the "scriptures" simply the recordings of prophets as well? If we truly believe in revelations and God calling prophets, then whats the difference? If our Heavenly Father is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then it would go to show a great tool in recognizing truth when we hear it. Does He ever change His policies of what He asks of us according to His own will? Yes, Hes even said so, and even uses this as a tool to test our obedience. Although what He asks of us or what He allows at different times may change, truth is still truth. Our charge is to discern between truth and error, and then operate within that truth according to His will, and not our own, regardless of how pure our intentions may be, especially if we dont agree, to have faith to follow Him.

Then why study the scriptures? If a man is a true phrophet his teachings will not contradict previous prophetic teachings. But there are many false prophets in the land, you need to have the spirit of God in many instances to discern fasle teachings. Not everythong that a prophet says is a prophecy. This statement your posting is so wrong on many levels. To continually preach "follow the living prophet" and disregard previous teachings because they don't coincide with what is taught today is a big problem, it leads people from the fulness of truth.
