I really wish that ID would’ve gone with their original plan for Quake 2 to be it’s own thing called WoR because it does not mesh with the original. I’m saying this as somebody who prefers the second game to the original because I like sci-fi and the way the levels are structured. One of the episodes has a secret level where you fight a few Quake 1 enemies in castle environments, and they don’t really fit with the rest of the game.
I think a big chunk of why I like the second so much is because it’s basically proto Half-Life, with Half-Life running on a modified version of Quake 2’s engine and carries over a lot of the ideas/mechanics. I also prefer Doom 3 over the others because the tone and the build up to the disaster is just like Half-Life. You should really try out the Half-Life series when it goes on sale. They’re a lot of fun.
