I grew up wrestling my whole life, have only dabbled in bjj. I also coach wrestling nowadays.
Sometimes your opponent will be fast, have slick setups, or just get in on your legs for whatever reason. It's inevitable if your opponent can wrestle. So, I highly recommend learning how to scramble. This is my favorite part about wrestling.
Learn how to pass legs and funk wrestle. Learn some counters, like broomsticks or elevators. I highly recommend practicing all of this by play wrestling. Going 100% is essential, but play wrestling gets your creative juices flowing. The sole focus is on moving efficiently through the scramble. You aren't trying to win. The goal is to improve your position in new ways. Theres also a creative element to it, where you feel and do things that youve never done, or even learned. Then, you can apply the feel you have from play wrestling to live scraps. Great wrestlers are great for many reasons. But some of the main reasons? Because there isn't a situation that they haven't been in, and they keep moving.
Obviously, not all scrambling practices are applicable to bjj, but some of it is, and scrambling is fun!
