Add it's most critical point in the 70s the number were estimated at approx 200. But today there are over 1,000 thanks to breeding and protection programs.

I can’t stop picturing this guy crawling stealthily as a three man camera crew is just casually walking behind him filming.

I don't know the exact number but there surely are more than 200 gharials in the world.
However, gharials are nearly extinct in my country, Bangladesh. The good news is that a gharial breeding centre has been launched in Bangladesh this year.

I forgot the conservatory but in this region there is a gharial specialist who is breeding the protected species. Multiple generations of gharials and through protected conservation the specialist at the conservatory has over 100 gharials ranging from elderly to newborn..it's absolutely amazing to see

For anyone interested or nearby. The San Antonio Zoo has a gharial exhibit. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but I seem to remember one of the zoo staff saying it was one of the bigger populations within a zoo. But either way, it's cool to be able to see them live.

I've been watching wildlife programs since Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. That shows my years! In all of those programs this is the first time that I have ever seen one! Well done, mate!

There is a huge one at the Audubon Zoo, here in the New Orleans. I feel its enclosure is too small for its size. Every time I see it, it’s always under water in the same spot, with its nostrils above the water.
