someone literally did this to me. listening off things that "hadn't happened to me". Things like you could have lost someone, you could be homeless, you could have been abused, you could lose a parent, and so on. I tried to walk away but she blocked my path. Everything she listed had happened to me. my dad had just Disowned me and said I couldn't see my baby sister age 6 at the time and it was her birthday when this girl did this to me (so I was depressed because I couldn't see her she's my half sister not that that makes any difference to me or my older sister), I had been homeless, my best friend lives 3 1/2 hours away, my step mom abused me when I was little (she stopped when my baby sister was born), and the only support I had at the time was my mom and older sister. I finally broke down and screamed at her thats when she finally shut up I told her she didn't know me just because we were in a class together meant nothing. she blinked and moved out of my way. I ran straight to my sisters classroom and waited for her to get out and cried on her my sister was in shock because I don't cry in front of anyone not even her and my mom. ( my baby sister is 11 now and I just started being able to see her a year ago but only on holidays and birthdays so my life has gotten better) but what that girl said and did a year after I couldn't see her and on her birthday. It has stuck with me.

Dude. My freshmen year my male teacher told me twice to smile because it lit up my face, and because I when I get nervous I smile so when I'd smile he'd say "there you go it's so much brighter now." I had this teacher first period so I was tired and regretting being born, of course I wasn't smiling. there's a good way to make people smile and a bad way. That same year one of the gate ladies for that school saw me laughing with my twin as we walked in so she said "you two have the happiest prettiest smiles every morning" and her compliment always made me smile more.

If it were me someone said it to, I'd laugh and say Yea, you're probably right! And I'd never say something bad happened to someone i love. I'm always afraid to even say one of my people are sick because i swear the time or two i have done it in the past, they literally got sickπ€¦ββοΈπ€£I love the pot so much! It is beautimuuusss!!!!

Omgosh what a terrible thing to say, I'd be worried that would actually happen. The guy saying smile shouldn't have said that, but I'm sure he didn't mean harm, just trying to make you happier. I smile at ppl a lot, and think awe they look like they're having a hard day, sometimes it cheers ppl up, and if it cheers 1/100 up for me it's worth it.

It's true, you can't assume things. Maybe just a smile and a nod is all that is needed instead of assuming all could be worse, it might not be for that person. It was a bit cruel to say that, but the point is taken too.

You clearly missed the point by being defensive. The point is try to be grateful cause it could be worse. He was probably trying to cheer you up or make you smile and you responded by trying to make him feel bad! This is whats wrong with only thinking about yourself instead of the other person's point of view. Try imagining the other person's point of view before responding next time.

Just because somebody might have it worse than you, doesn't mean what you're going through isn't important too. It's never okay to compare people's problems. All problems, no matter how big or small they are, are important.
