Governments around the world use a hidden tax to make up for their budget shortfalls and policy mistakes. This hidden tax is inflation.
When governments borrow money to cover their debts, they print more money to repay those debts. This increases the amount of money in circulation, which reduces the value of each existing currency. In effect, the government is taking money from people without them realizing it.
Inflation is a particularly regressive tax, meaning that it hurts the poor and middle class the most. This is because people with lower incomes spend a higher proportion of their money on essential items like food and housing, which are often the first to be affected by inflation.
