Is your child is starting school in September? This summer is a great opportunity to help your child get ‘Big School Ready!' with Nurturing Wild and Learning Resources. As busy parents it can feel overwhelming knowing even where to begin when thinking about how to support your child get ready for this big first step.
It can seem as though there is a lot of focus on fine motor skills to prepare your child to hold a pencil. It is important to remember that gross motor strength is needed too. Holding a pencil is far more than just working on your child’s pincer grip. The whole hand, wrist, arm, elbow and shoulders move and pivot too. You can help your child by exploring outdoor activities that make large movements such as using pavement chalks on the ground to make big circles. Use a large paint brush and water to pretend ‘painting the fence’. Get out a broom and sweep the patio in the garden.
Get active too! Go on nature walks outdoors and model to your child moving in different ways. Keep it fun and play games such as hide-and-seek. Unlike indoor spaces, the outdoors offers so much more room to move about!
