There are only 3 known ways for a slayer to become a Hashira in the demon slayer Corps.
The first way is through the conquest positions, where the slayer goes up rank until reaching the rank of Hashira, thus becoming one of them, for that the slayer needs to kill at least 50 demons while being in the Kinoe rank (the rank that is before hashira )
The 2nd way is by nomination, this nomination happens when the slayer regardless of rank manages to eliminate one of the 12 kizukis
The 3rd way is through succession, the Hashiras have the chance to train a tsugoku, so that if he retires or dies, that person will assume his position as a hashira.
