As a lifelong ATHEIST I have always sat in boredom and incredulity in any religious performance I have had to attend.
At school in England, a very old traditional school that was over 500 years old, we all had to attend ASSEMBLY every morning. It was a short service, a lesson from the Bible a prayer and THEN THE SAVING GRACE, A HYMN.
I have always regarded communal singing as one of the most enjoyable, invigorating and just beautiful experiences of life.
THIS hymn IS THE BEST.
The Headmaster would announce the hymn for that day “we will now sing hymn number ##” we knew the number well, a whisper would go around the 600 of us, all boys of course, in the hall “It’s Jerusalem”.
We would sing that hymn LIKE NO OTHER.
We had alternate words for almost all of the hymns in our Hymnal which we would normally sing, mixed in with the real words.
BUT NOT FOR JERUSALEM, some things were SACRED, even for privileged English schoolboys.
We would lower our hymn books, there was no need to read the words, WE KNEW THEM BY HEART.
And sing them we did, AT THE TOPS OF OUR VOICES. I am still singing after I saw this post this morning, there are still tears in my eyes.
OH HAPPY DAYS.
