Leaders need to be confident, speak up, and take charge. We hear that all the time, but what happens when confidence turns into overconfidence? Is it a blessing or a curse for organizations to have overconfident leaders?

According to David Deming, the Academic Dean and Isabelle and Scott Black Professor of Political Economy at the Harvard Kennedy School, overconfidence in leadership can be a dangerous trap.

Many leaders think they’re great at reading their teams, picking up on social cues, and understanding emotions.

But as David’s research shows, when that self-assurance is misplaced, leaders start misreading their people. This disconnect leads to poor decision-making and undermines trust.

David highlights that emotional perceptiveness is just as crucial as confidence in terms of leadership.

Leaders need to be self-aware and continually test their ability to truly understand their teams.
