When I first moved to Fairbanks it was -60. People freeze to death every winter. My partner had an acquaintance whom he went to the bar with in December.. They were messing around and the guy decided to get a cab and leave. My partner stayed and never saw the guy again. The guy's family were looking for him. The cops got involved. In April/May the snow started melting. There was a day care in the same plaza as the bar. The kids at the daycare were playing outside. They saw a person leaning against the fence. It was my partner's friend. He had passed out against the fence while he was waiting for the cab. He froze to death. It happens all the time.

When I think of schools that have been closed down for usually stupid reasons, I'll think that would be perfect for homeless people. Have them keep maintaining the building. Free labor in trade for safe place to live. Don't know about Alaska, but the lower 48 sure have a lot of very nice brick gov buildings closed. Put them to good use for homeless people.

I grew up in Alaska. Of course, weather is rough, but what do you expect? This short only portrays homeless people’s experience of living in Alaska which, if that is the goal then good job. My brother was an alcoholic so he ended up being homeless as well, but he was one of the toughest people I’ve ever met in terms of work ethic. I got to spend one summer with him out in the bush, and it helped him so much; he was joyful out there just living off the land away from alcohol. My experience? It is absolutely stunning in the winter time and absolutely stunning in the summer time.

I spent a week in Dead Horse, which is not far from Point Barrow, during a -60 degree stretch of weather. It was literally a frozen hellscape, with oil rigs and heavy machinery encased in a foot or more of sold ice and hoar frost. At night, you’re surrounded by hundreds of flare pads, burning off the natural gas that comes up with the oil.
Add to that, 😮that Dead Horse is a “dry camp” (i.e. no alcohol allowed), and I can safely say that it was the most dreary, desolate, and alien environment I have yet to experience in my 60 years
