There was a time in Cambodia where the average life expectancy for a male was 17

What surprises me is that the atrocities committed by Japan aren't as widely covered as the nazis. Japan made Germany look like preschoolers.

The reason we know humans are 70% water is because in world war II the Japanese stuck some prisoners in a huge convection oven and then cook them and then weighed them after when did the math and found they were 70% lighter

The rape of nanking. The general who was supposed to be in charge of the seige came down with pneumonia a few days before the assault and was not there to lead his troops but the officers "boosted the morale" a bit too much.

The chineese soliders who lost the battle and eventually surrendered were seen as below human for surrendering. They got dragged to the edge of the city, dug their own graves then got mowed down by machine guns/lit on fire/beheaded and bayonetted/tortured to death being encouraged by officers of the japan army to inflict as much pain as possible. Once the city was under rule, the army distributed opiums/heroins/other narcotics to the civilians to passify them and they went crazy. For 6 weeks they pillaged the city, killing/raping/both to the civilians. There was reports(as in actual pictures) of pregnent women getting their fetuses bayonetted out of their bodies because they would practice bayonett charges on them. Girls from 8 to 70 years old got hauled away to be sexually assaulted to death, one report from a trooper in the army said that the womens gentials got so inflamed they had to cut slits in them to continue sexually assaulting them, if they somehow survived they were stabbed/shot to death after. Men were forced to sexually assault their sons/daughters then shot as well. The army also forced some women to stay alive and be sex slaves for the army. The army would fire wildly into civilian crowds, and if they were out past curfew shot on sight. Sometimes civilians were thrown into buildings, locked inside then the building would be arson'd while the civilians were inside. They mass dumped bodies in the river but then it ran red with blood and got blocked in. The army then forced civilians to go out to the edge of the city in groups to dive mass graves then would be shot/decapitated, thrown into the grave and burned. The army would loot stores then kill the owners. They would also have beheading competitions on the civilians, practicing it for "fun." The slaughter was so intense the streets and rivers of nanking literally ran red with blood. There was a few american/european/german officers at nanking at the time and formed a 2.5 mile exclusion zone to harbor civilians. That's how brutal they were, the nazi's, americans and europeans got along to stop them. Eventually, the general got better and finally showed up. He was so disgusted by their actions he called them savages, later on when talking about the events he said he felt great shame and shuttered at the brutality his soliders showed. This general also has been photographed doing beheading contest with other officers/generals so the brutality must of been significantly worse than average for the general to be appauled. He eventually killed himself in 1947 and one of the last things he was reported saying was how nanking was his biggest failure. Its estimated that anywhere from 200k-600k were killed and 80k-220k were raped during the seige.

A good way to start you off with how bad unit 731 was, is asking two questions. Do you know what percentage the human body is water, and do you know how we know that.

There's something so darkly comical about hearing these absolute horrific acts of humanity talked about while chipper music is playing and some guy is working on a table

The congo is one I learned about recently in school heres a few things we learned about

1:the slaves had pot bellies because their organs were swelling from malnutrition

2:The slaves were put on display at a world fair and had the equivalent of a "dont feed the animals" sign put up because they were getting sick from candy

3:the slaves had their hands chopped of jf they didnt meet their rubber quotas

There is so much more which I didnt include due to not wanting to write that much but thats some of the most stand outish horrors so I recommend doing your own research about the congo under king leopolds rule

Fact: During the massacre of Nanjing, a member of the Nazi-party secured a 2x2km big safe zone for Chinese civilians. He also placed a Nazi flag on his property to prevent bombing. At night, chinese civilians would sleep under that flag.

Do you know how fucked is too fucked for Nazi Germany?

“Unit 731 made the Nazis think twice” is NOT an understatement or joke. 731 did shit that would have made Göring and Mengele physically and violently nauseous.

The worst human atrocity committed is probably one we’ve never even heard about. Something kept behind closed doors with a mutual understanding between certain people that whatever it was can’t get out. I see lots of examples of horrible things here but I have to wonder if the worst is one that’s been completely kept under wraps

Fun fact: the vast majority of info from unit 731 was actually completely usless. There were a few good bits, but most was either already know or had no real applications. The people who ran said experiments still got to walk free though, and were hailed as heros (I think) by quite a lot of people in Japan.

Ain't nothing that bagatellizes genocides and other mass killings more than referring to it as "unaliving".

With the Sierra Leone civil war, there is a book named “A Long Way Gone” about a young boy made to be a soldier. He went into detail about what he had to do and how it messed him up. He had to learn how to integrate with normal civilization again, but still suffered from PTSD and vivid nightmares

I was hoping someone would mention unit 731 one of the many things they did that was messed up was making a human centrifuge which they would keep spinning until those inside passed out or died

It's terrible and saddening how much scientific knowledge/insight we got from the inhumane experiments from Unit 731

The entire colonization of Turtle Island is quite tragic. The Residential Schools were something that were all around. Indigenous children ripped away from their familes as young as 4 and we lost our languages, culture, cut our hair, gave us numbers instead of names. Yet we still are here resilient and strong. The Residential Schools are what H1tler used as inspiration for the Concentration Camps. The last one in what is now Canada closed in 1996 in Prince Rupert, Saskatchewan. They are still finding bodies in unmarked graves at these "schools", and still MMIW continues, and systematic racism continues.

Couple of not so fun facts:
1. US supported and armed Pol Pot, and Soviet Union helped to overthrow him.
2. Commander of Unit 731 was granted immunity in exchange for data, gathered by his unit.
