Cats are strongly averted by citrus smells, likely because they have a bad reaction to citric acid. So, the scent possibly repels more than just parasites.
This would be supported by natural selection, as the birds with a stronger citrus smell would repel cats more effectively. The birds that smelled like citrus would not be eaten by cats, and thus would be far more likely to reproduce. This could arise fairly quickly in terms of evolution with the right predatory pressure.
