Cumberland lake is a cemetery. I used to go there and stayed on a house boat with my foster parents. Now, I'm an adult and I wonder what Cumberland lake used to be before the lake. I used to swim in that lake from sliding off the slide from off the boat. They told us it used to be a town under water but I was a teenager. I didn't think anything of it until I heard about lake Lanier and then it dawned on me about Cumberland lake Kentucky. Black folks did well for themselves in various places, state to state. They tried their hardest to keep them oppressed. Smh.... So now, I guess they're building new homes around the lake. It looks very peaceful and the home looks spacious and very nice to start a family in. Burnside was the town this young man lived in and was buried in the cemetery which is under water. You can see some of the graves from the shore in the shallow part of the lake. Cumberland lake is literally a whole cemetery now. This was in the 1920's and 1930's. There's a tunnel that is where folks would turn off and travel through to get to the town called Burnside. Now, you can see the top of the tunnel that is submerged under water. We were taught to respect cemeteries bc it is a resting place. But what if the whole town, which had a population of 300 black folks was purposely flooded. Would one still consider it to be a resting place? A cemetery? The sad part is folks vacation there, rent house boats and other things to have fun in that lake. Also, the government also played a part in flooding these different towns in various states. My heart literally aches. We're talking about men, women, children and babies. Like I said before, it's beautiful, peaceful and the homes looks lovely. BUT the history behind it and finding out that they couldn't run to their state politicians bc the government was part of it and funded the project for this man made lake. The homes,, farms stores, schools and cemeteries all under water. Now, it's just one big cemetery!!!!!
