Trendy Food in India- Green Gold Edamame | Business | Sarthak Ahuja

There’s a huge uptick in the amount of Edamame being consumed in India... and why is it so trendy?

For the second time this month, I happened to order Edamame Hummus at a restaurant while having a meal with a friend who flew in from the US.

Literally every upmarket Asian restaurant I visit now has edamame on the menu... either steamed with a sprinkle of sea salt on top, or as an ingredient in the dish.

One fine dine North Indian restaurant that shall not be named, served me edamame in a plating of Paneer Lababdar, which I was supposed to eat with a Butter Garlic Naan, and there’s one thing called following a trend, and another just putting it where God never willed for it to be.

Anyway, the global edamame market size is expected to be around USD 3 Bn and Japan is the largest consumer.

Frozen edamame is expected to be just 10% of the total market size, and is used as a source of vegetable protein in Asian culture.

China, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam are the largest exporters, and markets outside of Japan include the US and Europe, where it’s now picking up as a healthy snack to go with beer.

Taiwan calls it the “Green Gold”, and I wonder what they call computer chips.

As its essentially a type of green soybean, the Indian agricultural institutes have been trying to promote its growth in India, because it yields double the profits for growers compared to traditional soybeans.

Seemingly, the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh would be good to grow this, and I’m guessing parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well.

With India’s rapid rise in demand for protein as well as plant based protein, I’m only waiting for this to blow up like what happened with the avocados.
