I also didn't like the design, overall, of new Pokemon and how entirely unbalanced type representation was, and it took a whole new third game to do better.
Also the town layout and map layout was just poorly designed; pretty close to being as bad as Generation 1 and 2. It just felt like both of these aspects were a huge step down from the Hoenn region, who took full advantage of their new region both in Pokemon design and route design. I get some people don't like the water, but really, there's not that much surfing. A lot of it is totally optional. But just from an aesthetic point of view and thematically speaking, it was a great addition.
Also I like May/Brendan better, as well as Wally. They felt more like organic friends and rivals for you. They weren't complete jerks, but were clearly intended to push you to be better without being intentionally nerfed themselves. The rival in D/P/Pt just is spastic and evolves Pokemon at weird intervals, like he has no idea what is going on. Not a fan.
