I completely agree with you Richard! Good quality RG-174 with BNC connectors is light, flexible and good enough for HF portable operation.

But always handy to have a bit of rg58 knocking about in case the low loss coax n connector won’t fit πŸ˜‰ Good advice πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

RG58 for me. Common as muck, fairly squaddie-proof and doesn’t break my heart when I trash it by standing on it or dragging it between rocks during a SOTA trip. πŸ˜‰

With my current wire antennas project that I'm working on, for home and portable use, I am switching to RG174. Even at home, I am mostly QRP and I'm operating from a fixed portable setup due to the fact that I live in an apartment. I do have RG8X, but I mostly use it for my Buddipole/Buddistick antenna system.

I have always used RG8mini, why, I don't know, just have. I'm happy to carry it in my kit /P and it works really well for me. Thanks for sharing Richard.

Good quality coax, of course, is always the choice. However, most portable ops have lengths that are short for practical reasons. Wouldnl't loss be towards the bottom of the list for that reason since loss due to length usually becomes noticable over 50ft? Who carries that much? But then, I mostly do backpacking/SOTA ops and I usually have a pair - one set for my VHF/UHF freqs. and another for my HF - 10 & 17 ft respectively.
