I just learned that if we feel the heat spike start, you must pull your hand out quick!
Our sub in nail school said a coworker that was getting gels done for the first time didn't know and just suffered through it.
What happened, though, was that her whole natural nail popped off.
Sooo pull your hand out if you start to feel the burn!
Even if the tech tells you to deal with it.
Also remind your client if they feel heat then pull out.

Heat spike isn't from shrinking! It's the exothermic reaction!
They occur when the gel is exposed to UV light, which activates photoinitiators in the gel that trigger a chemical reaction. This reaction, called polymerization, hardens the gel and releases heat as a byproduct.
The low heat/90 setting on the lamp slows this reaction down and reduces the heat build up

Another thing to do is use a UV/LED light on a stand with a flexible gooseneck, with the light pointing upward. After I apply each coat of builder gel or gel polish, I turn my hand so the nail is upside down and pairing it over the light. I roll the nail back and forth of there is any discomfort. As I do my own nails and am right-handed, I sometimes file the nail on my right hand too much or too thin, which causes heat spikes for me. Judging the little light prevents that and also prevents flooding the cuticle.

From now on, I refuse to approach a nail lamp without my fingers walking towards it whilst I sing “Walk This Way” and thinking of Suzie 💅
