From now on, I refuse to approach a nail lamp without my fingers walking towards it whilst I sing “Walk This Way” and thinking of Suzie 💅

I have been getting my nails done for a little over 15 years, and this is the first time I've ever received an explainination. Thank you, always Susie!

I just learned that if we feel the heat spike start, you must pull your hand out quick!
Our sub in nail school said a coworker that was getting gels done for the first time didn't know and just suffered through it.
What happened, though, was that her whole natural nail popped off.
Sooo pull your hand out if you start to feel the burn!
Even if the tech tells you to deal with it.
Also remind your client if they feel heat then pull out.

Heat spike isn't from shrinking! It's the exothermic reaction!
They occur when the gel is exposed to UV light, which activates photoinitiators in the gel that trigger a chemical reaction. This reaction, called polymerization, hardens the gel and releases heat as a byproduct.
The low heat/90 setting on the lamp slows this reaction down and reduces the heat build up

So the 90 second low power setting is for something lol

Every single time I’ve had my nails done this has happened, and I always get a fright. It was always responded too with annoyance too. Thanks for this tip, it will really help. Just hope they don’t get annoyed at me doing this.

I've never thought of creeping my hand forward, I normally take my hand out for a few seconds when I feel that heat spike. I have naturally thin nails and I'm heat sensitive in general. I'm going to try the creep in method next time!

One professional gel tech always tells customers on their first appointment to put their hand in and out a few times at the start then put the hand in. It’s great, really helps prevent heat spikes and chemical burns.

I think it hurts because of the energy (heat) released when the chemical reaction that leads to polymerisation happens, not so much pressure on the nail. At least, that's what I've learned. They hurt for sure!

Can't believe I'm just now learning this! I almost lost my toenails a yr ago from this. Just assumed my nails were no longer strong enough for gel. Thanks for the info!!

Another thing to do is use a UV/LED light on a stand with a flexible gooseneck, with the light pointing upward. After I apply each coat of builder gel or gel polish, I turn my hand so the nail is upside down and pairing it over the light. I roll the nail back and forth of there is any discomfort. As I do my own nails and am right-handed, I sometimes file the nail on my right hand too much or too thin, which causes heat spikes for me. Judging the little light prevents that and also prevents flooding the cuticle.

You're the only person, I've seen address this, when I first experienced this, I didn't want my hand anymore...it's so painful 😢
