Id want to cry to. She should just light the candles again instead of call her a selfish brat.

I donā€™t think her feelings being hurt equals being a brat. Mom needs some empathy training.

If OP knew her daughter was having a tough time already why is she calling her a selfish brat?? Thatā€™s just rude!

This was a good opportunity for the young ones to learn that the world doesnā€™t revolve around them and it is okay for someone else to have their own special day. Teachable moment. Mom ITA. She should have relit the candles and showed empathy for Zara.

Definitely wrong.
Zara was already having a bad time, bad enough that OP broke tradition. I've been in that position myself, and it takes the smallest thing to crush you. So, the neice blowing out ZARA'S candles and taking the spotlight from what was supposed to be a happy day for her, then instead of being comforting, OP decided to insult and scold her. It would not surprise me if OP was part of why Zara is having such a bad time.

I wanna see OP have a tough time and then get called a selfish brat for breaking down then I wanna see how she reacts after that because that was just ridiculous in my opinion. She knew Zara was having a horrible time and still called her a selfish brat. Like wtf was she thinking calling Zara that? OP's family needs to make her life hell and then when she snaps they need to all call her a "selfish brat" for having her own feelings

If she was having a hard time before the party as you said this was probably just the straw that broke the camels back

OP is beyond rude & she could have handled that so many ways better than she did, poor 'Zara'.

I remember this story. The "hard time" she was going through was her fiance's death
Considering how OP seemed to downplay it, I think the candles were just the last straw for feeling like no one cared about her

Had a similar thing happen when I was in my teens. I donā€™t remember what the argument was about. I do know that I was having nasty medical issues that was causing my hair to fall out. I didnā€™t want to do something my mom asked me to do and she ended by informing me Iā€™m not some princess. I never expected to be treated like a princess, but it was a part of a nick name my dad would use for me. I honestly have had trouble believing people when they say nice things to me.

It got worse when I was fighting with my older sibling. They were mad that I hadnā€™t found a new job in 3 days time and it was my fault mom was yelling at us. I reminded them that I have been out of work for 3 days, while that had not done any job hunting in three months. My eldest brother then informed me very loudly that, ā€œNo one in this house cares about what you have to say.ā€ It got their desired results. I stayed quiet and stopped believing any positive feedback back from my family. Because I knew it was a lie. People call you nice things to get something out of you. They donā€™t actually care, youā€™re either useful, or useless.

Just re light the candles and let her blow them out. Why do people make it difficult??? And why donā€™t the kids have a birthday party every single year??? They only get so many and then they are gone.

Sheā€™s not a brat. Itā€™s her birthday.

Um kinda because it is her birthday so they should keep little children away from the cake so she can blow them out herself or they have to ask before blowing them out with herā¤

Op is being VERY rude. She knew her daughter was having a tough time, and seeing how upset she was after her candles were blown out, she would have just relit them and let Zara (idk if thatā€™s how you spell it) blow them out

Who says that to their daughter? Maybe she should be teaching her other kid some manners. Zaraā€™s behavior wasn't rude, I'd be upset too if someone did that to me. I have a little cousin who would throw fits when I got presents on my birthday & so she'd have to have something too or else she went crazy. I know how it is.

I think what happened here is that the 'rough times' the daughter was going through were all building up like if you shook a soda bottle. When that happens and you THINK that you're finally gonna have a some time to just enjoy yourself, the least little thing that happens to interrupt that joy can cause one to snap. It might seem trivial to everyone on the outside looking in, but to that person whose internal volcano is about to erupt? The fact she had an important-to-her moment that she might never have again taken away from her and then having family members laugh about it might have been her breaking point. I've been there and it's NOT fun. I get where the mom is coming from but she needs to be more supportive of her daughter.

You were very wrong who blows out someoneā€™s candles on someone elseā€™s birthday and everyone laughs it of how would you feel

OP could have been nicer. If your kid is going through something you don't ridicule them for having feelings.
