Was Ronald Reagan Showing Signs of Dementia at NATO Summit? (1988)

On 3 March 1988, US President Ronald Reagan spoke to the world press while meeting with UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at that year's NATO summit in Brussels. When pressed for a reaction to the joint communique agreed by NATO heads of government, the 40th president of the United States seemed to have forgotten that he'd read it. "I haven't seen it yet," he responded, before US arms negotiator Maynard Glitman intervened to remind the president that he had seen it the previous night and thought it "very good".

Although Ronald Reagan was not diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease until 1994, a full five years after he left the Oval Office, medical studies examining Reagan's speaking patterns during his time in power have found he may have been exhibiting signs of dementia as early as 1984. Reagan's own son, Ron Reagan, feared for his father's mental condition as the latter struggled through the October 1984 presidential debate against Walter Mondale, the actor-turned-politician reportedly looking "tired and bewildered" throughout.

In echoes of the 1980s, concerns continue to circulate about the mental fitness of US President Joe Biden after he struggled through his own presidential debate against Republican Party candidate Donald Trump. While calls from within the Democratic Party for President Biden to step down ahead of November's presidential election are growing louder, Biden himself has flatly rejected such suggestions, and repeatedly asserted his determination to run for a second term.

Reagan was like 77 at that point and I don't read much into that. He really started showing signs according to friends and family towards the end of 1992. He found out that he had it in the summer of 1994.

He was an older president and the job doesn't always allow for proper rest.

No it's because he thought it was crap and wasn't clearly paying attention 🤣

Yes, Reagan did show very early signs of his dementia as early as before his second term (he flubbed his first debate with Mondale and you can tell if you watch it that he has moments where he's clearly forgotten what he's talking about and doesn't even realise it). Worth saying that such moments would have been minor earlier on (likely even inconsequential to his governing) and this is likely not an example but him not knowing what 'communiqué' (I suppose another term for official statement?) means.

As if the president even reads "a comminque". This is why he has teams of legal experts on staff.

As someone who has watched 3 loved ones pass from Dimentia related conditions, i would say a hard maybe... he IS the POTUS and the number of stuff that lands on his desk is pretty hard to keep track of for people at any age. It is a pretty glaring lapse, and its possible he was showing early symptoms. Usually though, Diagnosis doesnt occur 6 years after symptoms start showing up. Although he could have had a very slow developing case. I know he didnt pass until after 2000. Must have been like 04 or 05 because i was in the car after a little league game when i heard it and the flag was half staff for about half the year.

This is click bait nonsense. Have you ever heard of jetlag and altered sleep schedules? Go back and watch the interview he did with FOUR network anchors at once at the end of his second term. He took questions with them for an HOUR and didn't miss a beat.

As an American I'm just going to ask the question. What is a "communique" and why did she make it sound like it was the title to something? The way that reporter phrased the question makes no sense. I have watched this at least 4 times now and I still have no idea what communique the reporter was asking about. Not to mention everybody in this comment section is acting like that would be the only communique he would have had to read the night before when the reporter doesn't specify what she's talking about but that's with me assuming that communique actually means a communication sent to him about something by someone 🙄

Old people shouldn’t be in office, dementia or not. 21-65 should be the age to run for president
