You say about it possibly being a really long piece of wood... However, surely if the piece of wood were longer/wider than 300mm and you wanted to split into 3, this method wouldn't work?

As when you move the tape down diagonally it would be much wider than 300mm?

Turning it down ie clockwise work for the top of the tape (inches) or up anti-clockwise works for the bottom ie mm ! Otherwise the pivot point is wrong !!! Just saying !!!!!
