J.D. Salinger never wanted The Catcher in the Rye to become a movie while he was alive, but it’s rumored he told his estate they could do what they wanted it after he was gone, so should it be made into a movie?! #bookfacts #books #jdsalinger #thecatcherintherye

Authors sell the rights to their works and the studio turns their book into an entirely different story, keeping little more than the title.

IMO, scripts for The Catcher in the Rye should be set aside and someone should try and make a biopic about JD Salinger.

I feel like a game could work since it could put you in Holden's head.

I think more authors should have Salinger’s gumption to tell movie makers to take a hike elsewhere. Of course, Salinger’s estate can now grab Hollywood cash if they so choose.

And we gotta wait until 2080 for it to become public domain lol

It could make a really good theatre production with just one actor on stage for golden narrating the whole book as holden, and kind of miming stuff. Idk how to put it but in my head it works lol

I would argue that no movie, especially no modern movie, could capture the novel well enough

I think the only adaptation can be good would be in a graphic novel, but from Holden's POV, aka we don't see him except when he looks at his reflection.

Keep Hollywood’s fingers out of that pie

i think that if they made a movie, it should be kind of documentary-ish and get a few chapters in before holden notices the camera guy and beats him up. and then the movie ends

Other creators want to batten on the genius of Catcher. Please let it survive without exploitation.

Expect a movie in 2081 when it becomes public domain. I doubt I'll be around to see it.

It is ridiculously easy to translate Holden's inner thoughts. And there sort of is an adaptation to Catcher in the rye, Igby goes down. It hits all the aspects of the book, but executes them in such a better way. Holden's inner thoughts are also just the tip of the iceberg in story telling.

a famous actor playing holden would ruin it imo, as would the polish of a big budget. it’d need to be weird and surreal and a little confusing, but it could be done. a studio would have to create it purely for the love of the game though, i’m convinced that any film adaptation would be a box office bomb

I think Salinger is right. Film is a very different medium from books and although sometimes novels adapt well to the screen (Peter Brook's Lord of the Flies comes to mind), most of the time, too much of the characterizations gets lost in the translation. Any book that is heavily dependent on inner dialogue is probably best left in print form.
