dumbells are amazing too, but to get the same level of stretch with similar weights as bench press, machines are your only option to not involve as many stabilizer muscles(less weak points your muscle or tendons can fail at; much safer option)

Main reason people get injured is because they so use to bodybuilding type of reps. BB shorten the range of motion thus creating imbalances in the particular muscles. They are building muscles but those stabilizers are tendons are not getting any love, thus tears and other ligament issues occur.

when youre young, you should use more dumbbells, not barbell. barbell is always great for strength but your dumbbells will train you stabilizing muscles as well as the main focus group. these stabilizing muscles are used in just about every upper body exercise that isnt using a barbell
