Ummm, just been searching for cabinet door options to freshen up the kitchen couple days ago and the cheapest solid wood option (raw spruce that I'd have to finish/oil myself) was three times as expensive as the dearest laminate board that I can order cut to size with all holes predrilled for hinges/handles on a CNC machine.
Three times less is not "marginally cheaper", it's the difference between "I can do the renovation" or "I can't".
