As a musician, sitting up straight is more normal for me. If I'm going to relax, it will be sitting back in a comfortable chair.

My physical therapist said that the best position for vertebral disk health is to sit up straight and then relax about 15-20% to of the way to fully relaxed. The reason we don't want to slouch fully is that it is uneven pressure on the disks between vertebrae and that can cause inflammation. People on their phones a lot will have worse problems because they are constantly looking down, increasing the uneven pressure on those disks.

One of the benefits to sitting straight is we have better lung capacity. Slouching leads to minor oxygen deprivation.
When you've slouched a lot, your muscles are weak - sitting up straight is tiring because of that.

But does this take into account what is healthiest for your body longterm? Does your body want to slouch because you've trained it to be that way?

If you have a strong core and back, your body will naturally want to sit more rigidly. So “your body wants” what it is trained to do.

Wait until you're older with a messed up back, slouching too much hurts.

Just have your knees in a level below your waist and you sit up straight automatically, without having to use your "muscles". Its a normal position for humans, to be straight up

yeah keep slouching and you will be visiting orthopedics in your early 40s .. as asthetic pose its bad and good luck projecting confidence with that arched back, esp when you are trying to get a girl lol

Point taken, and I totally agree. BUT you are obviously naturally inclined to have a straight back and erect neck, whereas I am naturally inclined to slouch like Quasimodo...so, yeah, when in public I try to stand erect, but I never look as good as you do. Just my genes, I guess.
