Yup, According to Ayurveda, different drinks are best suited for different Doshas, and overconsumption of a stimulant like coffee or black tea can cause an imbalance.
Coffee is hot in potency, drying, and mobile in nature and tends to increase Vata or Pitta dosha, leading to health issues such as anxiety, restlessness, acidity, skin rashes, ulcers, palpitations, constipation, etc.
It is recommended that people with dominant Vata and Pitta Doshas should avoid drinking too many stimulating drinks such as coffee, black tea and carbonated beverages as they can stimulate the nervous system too much.
An imbalance for Vata people can result in anxiety, restlessness, constipation, while in Pitta Dosha can lead to hyperacidity, ulcers and heart issues.
In case of aggravated dosha, one can add spices and fat to it. Cardamom is a Vata pacifying herb and it also helps soothe aggravated Pitta, reduce the feeling of restlessness, and provide cooling energy to the body.
Also adding half a teaspoon of ghee in the coffee blend can also help reduce the dryness and acidity that coffee typically induces.
It is not necessary to completely give up on caffeine but to find alternatives better suited for your Dosha. Consuming herbal and calming teas like chamomile and fresh fruity drinks can be beneficial. Also, when drinking coffee, take it with full cream milk or almond milk and add a dash of ghee too.
