Dafoe's performance is probably the most memorable of the entire movie and earned him his first Academy Award nomination. But even though he did not win, he did get the attention of none other than Martin Scorsese, who decided to cast him for another iconic role in The Last Temptation of Christ. This movie became somewhat controversial because it's nearly impossible to satisfy everybody portraying Jesus Christ. However, that is exactly what drew Dafoe to the role. While his performance as Jesus was very nuanced and controlled, the foe is also known for his other side, portraying out of the ordinary and completely unhinged characters. For example in Born on the Fourth of July, Boondock Saints, Wild at Heart, Speed 2 Cruise Control and The Lighthouse. We all know the foe has a very expressive face, which has given us many iconic memes over the years. And having such an iconic face is a great gift when you're an actor. But according to the foe, when you let it go, it will just start doing things on its own. I've got a pretty flexible face, an expressive face, and I don't censor it. I let it do its thing.
