Just a reminder that the modern corporate middle-manager evolved from dudes hired by 19th-century factory owners to ensure workers weren't lollygagging on company time.

“We’re having a meeting”
“Okay, but is it about something that we could be told over an email?”
“Why yes, how did you know?”

I'm an ICU Nurse. The amount of monthly meetings we had where we aired our grievances like malfunctioning equipment, being understaffed, unpaid overtime and whatnot only for all of it to be "taken into consideration". Corporate meetings feel like therapy sessions where the therapist doesnt offer any insight or potential solutions. It's insane considering we handle lives.

It's like metrics. They're meant to simplify complex ideas to make it easier to measure performance, but they inevitably become the goal in and of themselves. People in power lose sight of the reality behind the metrics and begin focusing on them so much that they become a detriment. They communicate not because they have anything to say, but because they've been told that communication is good. So they minmax communication itself as some sort of goal, rather than as the tool it should be.

We just had a management change due in part to stuff like this. The new manager is basically getting rid of anything that doesn't make sense. He's doing it slowly though to make sure he doesn't accidentally get rid of a meeting or procedure we actually need.

When I come to my job, I come to work, not make small talk. If you just leave me be, I'll get finished what needs to be done. Used to have a boss that would tell me to do something in a specific way that just made it much harder than the normal way I was doing it. Never had a reason other than "My ways the right way"

this is true and one of the worst productivity killers. our company's most important goal is "improving communication" even tho it's great and there's no issue. so much BS

And when you actually need to get something done : "um, we'll keep that for the weekly meeting. Let's not waste everyones time now"

That actually makes a ton of sense. Some of the most difficult times I’ve had at work or when my higher-ups were less concerned with my output and more concerned with controlling my time.

It drives me crazy. I know what I need to do. So just get out of my way and let me do it and if I don’t know what I need to do, I will ask and get direction.

Two things come to mind. Goodhart's Law and a quote from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, "Constantly talking isn't necessarily communicating"

A company that I used to work for would have SEVERAL emails coming from different departments DAILY. All this did was clog up our inboxes; once in a blue moon did it ever provide us with anything useful. Because of this, everyone kept missing the actually important announcements. The issue got so bad that our manager had to hold a weekly meeting to communicate the important stuff to us.
We literally could not sift through the emails AND do the work we needed to do within our workday.
But then again, this company had to instil workarounds on to workarounds on a regular basis, so it was clear that the upper management didn't give two shits. Actually, not even a singular shit.

I had a manager who would have unnecessary meetings almost daily. My solution was to give him a quarterly labor budget and move everyone from salary to hourly while keeping pay the same assuming a 40 hour work week. The meetings went from almost every day to twice a month.

The employees were elated to be working normal hours again without a pay cut.

Having meetings just to have meetings is so freaking stupid.

When they ask you to communicate and when you finally answer what your problem is, they just answer you with 'just suck it up'

Blasted this during our works meeting and got some laughs. Also probably a write up.

At least they were communicating to communicate a point
