The Natufians were a prehistoric culture that existed in the Levant region (modern-day Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria) around 12,500 to 9,500 BCE, during the Epipaleolithic period. They are notable for being one of the first human societies to transition from a nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a more sedentary one, which laid the foundation for the development of agriculture. This transition is one of the key milestones in the prehistory of the Near East and is closely tied to the broader history of human migration and settlement in West Eurasia.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Natufians were highly adapted to their environment, relying heavily on wild cereals and other plant resources, as well as hunting gazelles and other animals. Their settlements were relatively large for the time, with some sites containing stone-built houses and evidence of communal storage facilities, indicating a level of social complexity not seen in earlier hunter-gatherer societies.

Genetically, the Natufians are significant in understanding the genetics of early European and Near Eastern populations. Studies of ancient DNA from Natufian remains have shown that they were closely related to the ancestors of later Neolithic farmers who spread into Europe. The genome of the Natufians provides crucial insights into the history of human migration in West Eurasia, revealing connections between early Near Eastern populations and later European hunter-gatherers. These findings contribute to our understanding of the peopling of Europe and the genetic ancestry of modern Europeans, particularly in relation to the spread of agriculture from the Near East to Europe during the Neolithic period.

The Natufians also had a rich material culture, including finely crafted stone tools, personal ornaments, and even early forms of art, such as engraved stones and figurines. Their burial practices, which included elaborate grave goods and evidence of ritual behavior, suggest a complex belief system and social structure. As such, the Natufians are often considered a key culture in the study of the prehistory of Europe and the Near East, representing a crucial stage in the development of human societies.
