Tell him to lay some pine boughs or some other insulation under the tent. The ground will suck the heat out of you.A few years ago I decided to sleep outside all winter. We live in Montana and can get some serious negative temps. I got a bunch of straw bales and broke one open to lay down as a base before I put up my cheap 3 person Walmart tent. Then I stacked steambaths around it, laid some 2×8 boards across the top and put more strawbales on top, stacked at an angle. I then wrapped the whole thing in a blue tarp. I had built a wind/break to either side of the door and the tarp came down in front. Inside for my bed I had folded a full sized memory foam mattress in half to make a twin sized sleeping mattress plus added insulation. I did have electricity out there in the form of a long power cord. My bed had all the blankets I owned plus a somewhat poorly tanned black bear skin someone had given me. When I went to bed, I had a hair dryer that I would turn on as I climbed under the blankets and I would run it long enough to save time having my own body heat warm it up. Then I would shut off the dryer, cover up my entire body, just leaving a gap for fresh air to breathe. I would sleep warm all night long!
