I would love to go back in time and check out mid/late 90s and early 2000s Japan.

I literally was in Japan two weeks ago (Kyoto and Toyko mostly) and really enjoyed my experience. The locals were very friendly and welcoming to both my husband and I. However, I did notice a fair amount of tourists that seemed to be willfully not going with the flow of things and creating issues so I can understand the frustrations locals have sometimes. We found that taking the subway in Toyko and exploring a lot of less frequently discussed areas was a very interesting experience and offered a bit more variety.

Funnily enough, I grew up in Paris, a city that was overrun by Japanese tourists back when their economy was stronger, the tables have turned.

I was in Japan about a year ago. Yes, some places are very crowded but you only had to walk 2 minutes and you were alone. I felt like most tourists didn't enjoy walking. They go to some attractions with good photo spots and if a temple isn't near a station or really famous most don't bother to walk there. So many times I was almost alone in a garden, a temple, a museum, a restaurant etc..

I feel this… the first time I visited was right whenever the boarders opened after Covid. There were very few tourists and it was great in Tokyo. Now I go to school in Tokyo but live in Yokohama and the travel time is so worth it. I went to Harajuku the other day because it’s where I get my hair cut and it was honestly overwhelming with the amount of tourists . Also I’ve had random tourists just take videos or photos of me without even asking… it’s weird and can see why locals get aggravated.

I fell in love with Japan when I was a kid. Looking at the Haraijuku fashion and love anime and I honestly and a history nerd and researched about Japan like the Edo period ect. I’m finally going to be able to go to Japan this year. I really home I can express how much I love and respect the culture. How tourism is makes me sad and I get so angry when people harass others. I been learning Japanese also, I really want to learn and connect with the culture it’s a childhood dream of mine

I’m currently here after not visiting for 10 years. I was worried about over tourism, I have notice as soon as you step away from the tourist spots you will be hard pressed to see another none Japanese. I have found great pleasure in visiting less touristy places to find a more authentic japan.

I was in Japan in March and didn't really have much trouble with the many tourists—only in Kyoto and Tokyo was it crowded with tourists, and indeed, a bit annoying... That's why in Tokyo I mostly stayed outside the well-known areas.I also visited Osaka, Beppu-Oita, Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Bessho Onsen, and Hakodate, and those places were wonderfully free of tourists... I really enjoyed it.

I’m so glad I went in 2016. Had the time of my life, endless memories, and met lots of good people. I don’t think I could ever replicate that experience, especially as it is now. It’s a different time and I feel bad that locals are dealing with a surplus of distasteful tourists. Being from a tourist devoured island, I know exactly how that is.

Went to Japan a decade ago, all the popular tourist areas were still full of tourists.

That's what happens in tourist areas.

And despite what the locals may want to think, any area that has something unique or special about it is automatically a tourist area.

37 million tourists, mostly visiting for cultural enjoyment. The Japanese are starting to take measures against foreigners who misbehave.
People elsewhere: "good for them"

Meanwhile in Spain, with 1/3rd of the population and 3 times the tourists, a lot of them coming for party, beach, drinking, etc, which increases the tendency of them causing havoc.
Spaniards also start taking measures to prevent the consequences of massified tourism.
People elsewhere: "how dare they!"

Just spent a month in Japan. Overtousism only seems to be a few streets in a few spots, once you break out of them it's fine. And once you get out into the other cities, you'll notice how UNDER-crowded a lot of places are. Eg, Kanazawa, Nagano, Matsumoto, Matsuyama felt basically empty.

The same happened to Covent Garden in London after the flower market moved. It became a haven for small, unique shops and stalls selling unusual and different things. Then the big shopping names took it over and it’s back to being High St UK (though even that is failing now).

I always focus on going where the locals go and not to Tourist areas when I travel. It made France, Germany, and California so much more enjoyable.

I very much want to go to Japan and experience more of the countryside and local food, but I'm worried that the mess tourists have made over the last while will have made it far more difficult.

Sitting in the airport about to leave and I agree. I think it speaks to a bigger issue of why do we go on holiday? What do we expect them to be? Do we just visit popular spots because we have seen it on social media or because we personally will enjoy it. I loved visiting more of the countryside and quieter streets in Tokyo, rather than the popular tourist spots. I will definitely be back but ny trip will be more focused on those things.

I went last year with 2 friends and it was amazing. We traveled around the big cities, the normal tourist-thing for a first time visit. Seems like we got really lucky, got perfect weather, and it wasn't too crowded. Fell in love with Tokyo, the food, the people, maid cafés... I want to go back as soon as possible.

From what I am seeing from Japanese citizens online they are getting increasingly tired of the low interest/low knowledge social media visitors. I'm holding off for a couple of years to see if a stronger yen and locals being fed up settles things more for visitors who have a genuine interest in and respect for the country. I've seen posts saying "I'm going to Japan, what's there to do there"? Really?

First time visitor, I just got done with a 12 day trip. We spent 4 days in Tokyo, 5 days in Kyoto and 3 in Osaka. There was a fair amount of foreigners but I saw what I wanted to see through my time there and it made everything worth it.
