Found at Tepe Gawra in Northern Iraq in the 1930s, this six-sided die (d6 to gamers) dates back 4500 years ago. Yet, it looks rather modern (despite it not being a perfect cube). It's made of baked clay, so might not take the abuse that modern dice are put through, but it's amazing that it looks so modern despite its age.
Be sure to join me and Milo Rossi (‪@miniminuteman773‬) as we look at this object and several others in the Penn Museum Near East Study Room.

"Lugalhili, it's your turn. What do you do?" - "Uhm... I raise my daggers and attack the terrible snake!" - "Great, roll 1d6 for damage."

Of course they had dice, how else would they have played "Heaths and Hyenas"?

The 1 is opposite of the 6 as in modern dice but the rest is not arranged to get 7 in opposite faces

I also wonders how fair the die is. Are the depths different between the faces such that one side is not favored?

Given how perfect it looks, I wonder just how old the concept of the classic d6 cube is. Fascinating stuff!

Not the modern conventions of 7 for opposing sides, but still super cool!

I'm thinking of Robert Deniro in Casino with his measuring devices. Figuring out if it is balanced.

Would a metal die have lasted this long? It seems like it would be easier to make fair metal dice because of how hard fired clay is. It seems like unfired clay would be easy to bias.
