The Chaparral 2J: It's a simple story, really. If downforce is so important to keeping a race car stuck to the track, why rely on passive aerodynamics when you can use active aero to generate it, even while sitting still? That was the philosophy behind the Chaparral 2J, Jim Hall's final quirky shot at the Can-Am scrutineers. The refrigerator-shaped race car was built around a pair of giant fans at the rear of the car, powered by a two-stroke engine. The setup could provide a maximum of 1.5 G of downforce, regardless of the car's speed—unlike traditional aero cars that needed high velocities to grip the ground. Quick, but never reliable, the vehicle was eventually banned by the SCCA based on rather vague complaints from other teams.
