I taught my dog paw and was very proud of him and myself... I can confirm that he now paws for literally everything, everywhere and at everyone, including kids, but luckily, he is quite gentle.

That's why you shape that trick into something more. Like opening the bins for you, the cupboard doors, the fridge, button pushing, door opening. There's YouTubers that have taught their dogs to play hand games with them. Teaching Paw is just bloody fine, but you can't get lazy about it and just leave it at that if you're that worried about them offering behaviors.

litterally just tell them no when they offer the paw and don't give them attention for it. had that problem for all of 3 days before my retriever figured out she ain't gettin nothin for it

I learn my dog many things. Also helping with trowing a paper bag away. Then he gets a treat. Last time he decided, after he trows a paper bag away and get his treat for helping, he picked up the same bag out of the trash and offered me the same bag to do it over. So he gets another treat. Smart dog😂

We teach it to service dogs if it's going to be used as an alert but usually we try to avoid it because of this reason. We prefer a nose boop for an alert as a result because that's more less annoying and you're not risking your clothes getting torn or your skin getting scratched. My trainer and I initially wanted to teach that to my Labrador as an alert command and I learned very quickly it's uncomfortable because she gets insistent when I don't listen. I was coming in with bruised legs because she was so stubborn about it and she was not going to let me do the behavior that she was being trained to interrupt. So we moved to a jumping up on me as an alert which is not ideal in many cases but for me I need a more persistent alert and one that is a little more aggressive and that works really well. And she doesn't jump unless she sees me doing the thing I'm not supposed to do because that is her cue to do her behavior.

I thought you taught dogs to paw so they’d offer it when you have to clip their nails or when they have to offer it at the vet.

Totally agree. Whippets really struggle to sit, can you imagine the discomfort every time! She naturally nose nudges to let me know shed like something and I've taught her to not snatch when offered a gift. Gentle sweet child 😊

And very dirty clothes, especially in the autumn/ rainy days. Very embarrassing when meeting your smart looking neighbour - and your dog ruins both their trousers and coat...

I have never taught that to my dogs. They will typically do it at the wrong time, such as you are dressed up and they have muddy feet. One of our dogs was taught by my son to do a "high five" but she only ever did it with him.

I had a rescue small size Labrador retriever. She did this all the time. The only thing was she'd drag her paw down my leg. Very painful!

I had one dog who did it to ask to go to the toilet which was great but my current dog does it everytime she wants attention.

Nah. Paw is a foundation behavior for many other things- high five, pressing buttons, ringing bells, scratching on nail pads, etc. Plus it gives them an easy behavior that will appease the "can i pet your dog" crowd for a dog who likes to interact but mot necessarily always be pet.

I’m so glad I came across your videos when I got my puppy. I never taught her that trick and she has never pawed me for a treat or when I’m eating. Still working on the jumping behavior but it’s getting better because I tel people to ignore her if she jumps and wait for her to sit
