It's not JUST Barbie. ALL movies since 2020 Covid shutdown have been garbage. Or average, at the very BEST.
2019 we got Joker, 1917, Jojo Rabbit, even Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was better than ANY movie in the subsequent 4 years. And all 4 movies I mentioned came out in ONE SINGLE YEAR.
The only two halfway-original, interesting movies (that rise above the level of "meh, that was pretty ok, I guess") I've seen, realeasd since 2020 Covid shutdown, are 'Everything, Everywhere All At Once', and 'Late Night With the Devil'. And they were both decent... But nowhere near the standard of top-tier movies, pre-2020.
Hollywood is dead. Its decaying corpse wil just keep on farting out sequels and remakes and reboots, co-directed by a diversity and inclusion consultant, to screen out anything that may offend somebody... But the era of Hollywood producing the unique creative visions of an actual, real live human being, after many years of being slowed to a trickle, have finally dried up entirely...

What would you say makes Gladiator objectively better?

Ok compare Shrek to The Green Mile. Both large intimidating outsiders, cast into a villain role by manner of appearance. Once accepted and understood by unlikely friend figures reveals a softer, magical hero character with masses of unique charm.
Two very different approaches with similar archetypal stories yet as a comparison it seems pedantic.
The target audience matters.
Barbie was a film with a target audience of potentially half the global population- women.
Why shouldn’t it be open for celebration?
(I’ve seen neither films, FYI- so I’m not going on actual content.)

That shouldn’t be a factor, you can’t compare Barbie to Gladiator because they are completely different movies. Would it be correct to compare Gladiator to Casablanca? There will be a ton of moviegoers who will say, Gladiator is better than Casablanca because it looks so awesome 🙄 Barbie is a social commentary satire, and Gladiator isn’

Barbie is honestly just a feminist Space Jam.
