How to get around a copyright claim on your own song. Why do the videos you post keep getting muted even if you’re the songwriter and artist? Well, turns out it’s partly a broken system, and partly… semantics! We all know that most digital distribution companies have agreements with artists that state the artist will keep 100% of their copyright and publishing. All the Distributor takes is the publisher’s share of monies for services rendered. While this sounds pretty cut and dry, it turns out it isn’t. When the distributor sends your music to social media platforms, because they take the publisher’s share of the monies, the social media platforms recognize THEM (the distributor) as the publisher, and effectively, the copyright holder. Additionally, turns out there isn’t yet a flawless mechanism to remedy this! Stay tuned for part two but for now, get yourself whitelisted by your distributor to minimize the chances of this happening again!
