Amber is a 20 to 160 million year old fossilized tree sap/resin from ancient pine trees. The organic resin was created by synthesis of light and absorption of minerals from the water that had overtaken the land area. Colors range from brownish yellow to golden yellow and orange and even butterscotch to white. Deep cherry red is more valuable. Some specimens under fluorescence or bright light will display a green or blue cast. Long ago ancient forests were submerged by the sea. Over millions of years, the tree sap fossilized as the minerals in the water and surrounding plant matter helped to preserve the organic matter and harden it. Sometimes, in Baltic amber you can see the water air bubbles preserved in the fossil. Baltic amber washes up on shore as opposed to Dominican amber and specifically around Chiapas, Mexico (yielding in best qualities red to green) and must be mined out of the ground due to the geologic changes that covered the ancient sea with landscapes. Dominican amber is mostly transparent and yields some of the most well preserved plant, insects and fossils
