Amazon EBS allows you to create storage volumes and attach them to Amazon EC2 instances. Once attached, you can create a file system on top of these volumes, run a database, or use them in any other way you would use block storage. This means that the data is kept on the AWS EBS servers even when the EC2 instances are shut down.

In simple terms it is storage for EC2 instance. EC2 and EBS are often used together to create scalable, highly available cloud-based applications on AWS. EBS volume type could be SDD based or HDD based. Amazon EBS provides a range of options that allow you to optimize storage performance and cost for your workload.

The basic difference between EBS and S3 bucket is Amazon S3 is an object storage service that can store large volumes of unstructured data, whereas Amazon EBS is a block storage service that is ideally suited for durable, low-latency data storage associated with EC2 instances.

These options are divided into two major categories: SSD-backed storage for transactional workloads, such as databases and boot volumes (performance depends primarily on IOPS), and HDD-backed storage for throughput intensive workloads, such as MapReduce and log processing.
